Renegade Craft Fair

Erik and I went to the Renegade Craft Fair yesterday at Fort Mason. They had some super cute stuff. However, we didn't buy anything. We didn't buy anything because 1)I don't have my ATM card and 2) We don't need any unncessary stuff.

Save Karyn

I just finished the book 'Save Karyn'. This girl also has a blog 'Pretty In The City'. It was a good book. It was non-fiction about how she moved from Chicago to NYC at age 28 and ran up her credit cards to over $20K. Then, she made a site and asked people for money & they actually sent her money to pay off her cards. She also sold a lot of her expensive items on Ebay and in less than a year, she was debt free.



Karyn is really funny. She was so naive when she moved to NYC but she learned a lot about herself. The website actually got her int'l attention and the NYT, WSJ, Today show all interviewed on the site!

Mornings

I was thinking today about how all of us who go out in the AM to the park with our dogs, are pretty much rolling out of bed. We go out there in crappy clothes and stand there while our dogs do their thing or play with the other dogs. I find this funny because think about people who don't want to answer their door for the Fed Ex guy in the AM or when they are dating someone think, 'I dont want him to see me un-done'. Here we are, going out in the park with lots of other people like this & not caring. It was just funny to me how because we all have to be out there with the dogs, its perfectly fine to come out there un-done.

A crappy end to a fun night

Last night, my friend Lauren and I went to dinner. Then, we went to a bar across the street. We were standing right up against the bar and our purses were hung below the bar. Lauren was standing up against them the entire time. This guy was talking to us for a little while. She went to the bathroom and I stayed. We left the bar a little bit later.

I am in the cab going home and suddenly realize I have no money when I look in my wallet. My wallet is messed up. My atm card is gone. Its almost like someone stuck their hand in my purse, rummaged around, and pulled out what they could. I was shocked. Erik had to come out and pay for the cab. I immediately called the Bank to cancel my card.

Its so annoying though that someone would do that. We were not in a shady part of town, either. So from now on, no purses at the bar. Thankfully, they got away with only like $40. I'm NOT happy that I paid for their drinks last night though.

Evie Got In Trouble

This morning, Evie got in trouble in the park. Now, everyone should know that Evie 1)loves loves loves to meet other dogs and play with them. She loves to run and chase her dog friends. 2)She cannot be off leash like most dogs because she does not come back when she is called.

Although she cannot be off leash, there are a few dogs that I can drop her short leash and she can play with such as Maybelle.

This morning, her and Maybelle were running around playing. This guy started walking down the path with two dogs that looked like Scottie dogs. Before he even gets to us, he starts to pick his dogs up. But he is picking them up by the leash so they are dangling by their necks. Evie sees this & runs over and jumps up on the guy. The guy starts yelling 'No, No, No'.

Couple things - Evie probably just wanted to say hello. She probably was wondering what the heck was going on with these dogs hanging by their necks. Then, she probably freaked out that the guy was yelling. I went over, grabbed her & we walked away.

I said I was sorry, she just wants to play. The guy was like - this is ridiculous or whatever he said. Then, he walked off. I've never seen this guy or his dogs before. I was mad that Evie ran over but also mad that I didn't recognize that she would run off(because normally she stays with us and Maybelle). But, I was also pissed that the guy had a heart attack. Evie did not hurt him or the dogs. She wasn't barking or biting. I really think this was a case of people who are scared of Pit bulls (since she is clearly part Pit). If he just walked his dogs like a normal freaking person, she would have ignored him!

Anyway - I will get over it. And, be extra careful about her running around. And, probably get more serious about her recall training.

Love The One You're With

I just finished "Love The One You're With' by Emily Giffin. It was a book about a woman who dates a guy and they are completely in love and then they break up. She gets married to someone else, has a great life, but this guy comes back in her life & she can't stop thinking about him or about if her great life is so great.

It was a good book, quick read. "Something Borrowed' remains my favorite Emily Giffin book though.

Weird Week

Is anyone else having a weird week? I feel like we came back from Santa Cruz on Sunday all relaxed and jumped back into work on Monday. We didn't clean the house or go food shopping. We left all of the bags of clothes around the house. Things are just out of order. We didn't start the week organized. Now, I'm just waiting for the weekend.

Next week, we leave on Friday AM for Connecticut! I am going to miss Evie for the week we are gone :-(

This weekend, we are heading down to Santa Cruz, CA. We are off from work on Thurs & Fri so we are driving down tomorrow. It is Erik, Me, Kimmy, Cristin & Evie. It will be fun. Hopefully the weather is not freezing like it is here in SF!

Evie Actually Fetching

Evie hates to play fetch outside with a ball. Everyone has these ball launchers and their dogs go crazy for them. Evie has one that she will fetch about one time and then ignores it. However, if other dog owners have them, she goes crazy.

She goes crazy only because she knows a dog will be running for the ball and she wants to run with them - she could care less about the ball.

Erik had this great idea to put a treat in the ball and throw it for her. It worked!!! Here is a video of her actually playing fetch & she looks like she enjoys it. Sorry, it is sort of shaky cam and somewhat boring.

This movie was absolutely horrendous to the point that we walked out of the movie. It made no sense, had all of the stupid Mike Meyers faces/innuendos, and was just awful. We asked for our money back but it was after 30 min into the movie. I'm probably writing a letter to the theatre to ask for our money again. It was beyond bad.

Financial Planning for Women

Over the past five years, the market has grown for financial advice directed specifically at women. Independent women are financial planners’ newest target.

But what makes women different? Elda Di Re, a partner in Ernst & Young’s Personal

Financial Services group says she thinks women, even if they work, often still imagine that a “white knight” with money will come and carry them away. In anticipation, “they worry about having the right kind of clothes, the right kind of shoes, the right handbag.” Women also live longer and are more likely to die alone, than men. And Ms. Di Re agrees with the idea that they find conventional financial planning advice unappealing.

Around 40% of the women who participated in a study released today by Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America said they found information on financial planning and investment either too complicated to understand or too boring to follow.

Solutions to this problem vary. Ms. Di Re says women should start paying more attention to their companies’ benefits. This goes for her own employees, too. “Every time I give out raises I ask: ‘Are you contributing to your 401(k)? Are you contributing as much as you can get matched?’ I am surprised by the answers.” She also recommends sitting down at least once a year and mapping out a balance sheet to figure out assets and liabilities, cash flow and net worth. Other financial planners have found women respond better to an entirely different format.

Ameriprise Financial tries to get women engaged by using fewer numbers and more emotional language. “It’s not just about finances,” says Elda Macias, director of market segment at Ameriprise. It’s about: “What do you want to do? What do you dream?” One tool Ameriprise uses is the “Dream Book,” a booklet given to women and couples containing questions like “If you could do anything, time and money aside, what would it be?”

“Men think about money like a river,” says Arika Larson, who runs a firm called Women Be Wise and helped Allianz with its focus on women. “It’s always flowing in their mind. Sometimes it’s just a trickle but they know the rains are going to come.” By contrast, Ms. Larson says, “Women think about money more like a lake. This is what I’ve got, this is how much I’ve got and if I give you some I’ll have less.”


**I've read finance books and I do not agree that women think some prince is coming to save them. Women think and feel differently about money in general. One big reason for women is that t scares some - all of the numbers/math/definitions of funds. They are worrying about other things like their kids & school. They will gladly give the finances over to a Husband if they can. However, some are completely different and have a firm grasp on finance. Suze Orman is one of the money masters and she says NO MATTER WHAT, if you have a husband who is a millionaire....the woman in the house should know exactly what the family finances are from the mortgage to the light bill. It is NOT OK to be in the dark about these type of things. I agree with Suze on that one for sure. ***
