More Doggie Behavior

I talked with this guy at Evie's camp today about her behavior. He does not think she is 'fear aggressive'. He thinks she needs more training. He said we have to stop & redirect her attention. So, when we see someone who will set her off, stop her, and make her sit, etc for treats.

Turns out, Erik already does this and she rarely goes crazy with him. So, I will be trying this to see if it works.

Erik's Surfboard

Erik had a surfboard made for him! This guy in the area makes boards. He picked out the color & everything. He loves it. Erik could probably tell you more about than I can.

Jessica Simpson on GMA

Did anyone see Jessica Simpson on Good Morning America? She had to stop the music because she 'couldn't hear anything'. I like her but she didn't sound that great. She sort of forgot the words in her first song. Also, what is she wearing?

Dlisted says "What in the pork rind hell was she wearing?! It looks like Miss Piggy's unused maternity dress from when she had a pregnancy scare that one time."

Sarah is not HIlary

This is for anyone who is/was a Hilary supporter and is thinking of voting for McCain because Sarah Palin is on the ticket. Just because Sarah is a woman does not mean she is the same as voting for Hilary. They have VERY different stances on the issues. Hilary is progressive while Sarah is ultra-conservative. Oh and Sarah supports wolf killing. And hunts moose. I think PETA should have a talk with her.

Waves to Wine

This morning, I volunteered with the MS Society. I got up at 430 am and went down to AT&T stadium(aka Giants stadium). My job was to register the riders. It was cold & dark but they had food & coffee. Having done an MS bike ride for a few years, I know its important to be fast & have answers when people pick up their packets and have questions. It was fun though and I'm not even tired now. I will probably need a nap around 3pm. MS is the charity I care most about helping & raising money for so this was not even a question in my mind to get up & do this.

These riders are doing 75 or 100miles today. They started in SF and have to ride to Sonoma!

Another weird dream

Last night, I dreamt I bought 2 dogs at the grocery store last night. I knew the cashier so he only charged me 30 cents for one and 50 cents for the other.

Evie's Behavior Issues

So, Evie has some behavior issues. We know she has an issue with Men. Basically, since she was neglected & abused her first year of life, she clearly wasn't socialized. She wasn't shown different people, races, people in uniform, etc. Sometimes, and we have to watch for the trigger, she will lunge and bark and someone. It could be on the street or in the park. It really sucks b/c it stresses me out.

I looked up the behavior and she might have 'fear aggressiveness'. This means that she is afraid of people/things she doesnt know, so she gets aggressive. It could be dangerous. Her old trainer suggests we get a behavior specialist. I am going to call the SPCA today to talk to them @ her behavior & see what they recommend.

My friend in the park who has a dog said that she had a Pit who wasn't aggressive but became aggressive over the years. The more the dog got attached to the owners, she felt she had to protect them. Evie didn't have the chance to meet all different types of people in CT or dogs. She didn't walk past all of these people all of the time. Now, she is exposed to everything & I dont think she knows how to handle it.

However, today I walked her on the 'gentle leader' and she was a dream. She can't jump b/c it pulls her head. She doesn't bark b/c I really think she thinks she cannot open her mouth with it on (which she fully can). So, I dont know. Is it a behavior issue that needs the Dog Whisperer or will the Gentle Leader help us? We'll see.....

The Man on the Bus

Since Erik hardly blogs, I am putting up one of his stories on my blog. Erik works until midnight and sees some interesting characters on the bus. The other day, a nice African American man got on the bus. He was dressed in a suit - nice shirt, tie, vest, and jacket. As he walks down the aisle, Erik sees he has nice shoes & socks on.

But wait, why is a belt around this guys neck? And then he gets towards the back of bus and Erik realizes he........

has no pants on except for boxers.

Low Blood Sugar

I think I have low blood sugar. If I do not eat regularly, I get shaky. This morning, I went to IKEA with my boss and then came to work around 1130am. I immediately was doing email and on calls. Then, I got shaky. I basically ran to Subway got the meal deal AND a cookie. I had to eat the cookie on the way back to work so I wouldn't pass out!

There is a big MS Bike Ride here this weekend from SF to Wine Country! I am not riding in it but volunteering at it. I will be helping to register the riders. I got the 5am-8am shift. Ugh! Oh well, anything for charity!

Being a Decent Company

Whole Foods is the 1st grocer to agree to pay more for tomatoes from Florida in order for the workers to get higher pay.

Whole Foods makes deal for Florida tomatoes

Whole Foods Market said Tuesday it has agreed to pay an additional penny per pound more for any tomatoes purchased in Florida, as part of a deal with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.

The coalition has already signed similar deals with many of the major fast-food companies including Burger King, McDonald's and Taco Bell. Whole Foods becomes the first supermarket to agree to a deal with the CIW, which has been advocating for improved wages and working conditions for Florida tomato pickers.

''After carefully evaluating the situation in Florida, we felt that an agreement of this nature was in line with our core values and was in the best interest of the workers,'' Karen Christensen, global produce coordinator for Whole Foods Market, said in a statment.

Whole Foods said it hopes to be able to pass the additional money on to the workers. That issue could be challenging because Florida tomato growers are refusing to participate in any of these agreements.

Whole Foods wants to implement a domestic purchasing program, similar to the Whole Trade Guarantee program used in developing countries to ensure that producers and laborers get an equitable price for their goods and a healthy working environment. Whole Foods said it hopes to be able to purchase Florida tomatoes from growers willing to follow a similar program.

World wants Obama as president: poll

US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama may be struggling to nudge ahead of his Republican rival in polls at home, but people across the world want him in the White House, a BBC poll said.

All 22 countries covered in the poll would prefer to see Senator Obama elected US president ahead of Republican John McCain.

In 17 of the 22 nations, people expect relations between the US and the rest of the world to improve if Senator Obama wins.

More than 22,000 people were questioned by pollster GlobeScan in countries ranging from Australia to India and across Africa, Europe and South America.

Weird Dream

I had a strange dream last night. I was in a crowd and Michael Phelps was there, walking past me. It was a parade or something. I asked him for goggles & he was like, Ok heather, you can have a pair but don't take the speedo ones. It took me forever to find the pool, get into the locker room, and find the bag with the goggles. So strange.

Walking 2

Evie and I went for a walk yesterday. We walked through our park into GGP and back. She had so much fun. She is not that much of a walker. She likes to walk, stop, sprint, roll around, repeat. So, I had to keep her in line. We probably did a 2 mile walk. She was exhausted when we got home. I think it was a combo of her not sleeping during the day + the walk. It was amazing though how tired she was at 7pm. Walking every night might be my motivation to tire her out! Overall, it went well. I felt like I was exercising but not worn out.

Tyler Florence Shop

We stopped in Mill Valley, CA on the way home from the beach to get gas. We stopped downtown to get Jamba too and went to the Tyler Florence shop. He lives in Mill Valley but wasn't at the store that day. It was cute & looked a lot like Williams-Sonoma.

Stinson Beach

On Saturday, my friend Amy & I went to Stinson Beach. It is up over the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. You have to take a long, windy, road with a great view up to the beach. It was HOT - like 85!


Ok - THIS is what we think is a drug bust. The cops were there when I got there and they were going through one girls bag. They took her away in the cuffs.

Shrimp Suck. I love shrimp but did you know that when fishermen fish for shrimp, they are killing a ton of other fish!? This sucks!!

Question of the Day: Target

Why do people walk into stores, get a cart, and stop? They stand there and talk to their spouse/friend/etc or look at the flyer. Do they not realize that there are people behind them & they are in the way? Do they think they are the only ones coming into the store(TARGET!).

Walking

Once I joined TNT and trained to run, I hated to walk. I thought it was too slow. I would run home from the bus, 1 block. Now, I feel like I'd rather run short distances but do not hate walking anymore. In fact, when I see people running, they usually look uncomfortable & unhappy (this is me saying this, I haven't asked these random people their thoughts).

Today, I saw a woman walking & she looked happy. She had her iPod on and was walking at a decent pace & looked happy. I always read in magazines about walking to stay fit and blah blah but I thought it was for older people (to be honest). Now, I wonder if I should try it. I wonder if I would be happy or just have the urge to run. We'll see.

The Baby Earthquake

Minor quake jolts Oakland, California

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck east of Oakland, California, at around 9 p.m. ET Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter was about 10 miles (16 kilometers) below the surface, the USGS reported.

Residents said they felt a sharp jolt, saw plants sway and dishes rattle.

There were no initial reports of damage or injuries.

I didn't see anything rattle. I thought dogs were supposed to know when something like this would happen. Evie just laid there!

Tremor

OMG. Around 9pm, I felt this weird motion in the house. I thought it was a big truck going by but it was a....TREMOR. I sat here, looked at Evie who sat up and just looked at me like, 'What do we do?'

It was a 4.0 earthquake in Alamo, CA and we felt a tiny bit of it. Scary!

HOT

It is hot here today. It was in the 80's and will stay like this all weekend! Apparently, Sept is our warmest month. I am thinking of going to the beach tomorrow.


Evie is being funny. When it's hot, she likes to go in the mud. When she goes in the mud, she knows to come right home & get in the tub. She did this, this morning. So, she had a bath at 730am. Tonight, at 6pm, she did NOT go in the mud but still came home & hopped in the tub. So, I turned the water on for her to drink & sprayed her down. I think she was hot & wanted a cold shower. Too funny!

Royal jelly is a honey bee secretion that is used in the nutrition of the larvae. It is secreted from the hypopharyngeal glands in the heads of young workers and used (among other substances) to feed all of the larvae in the colony, including those destined to become workers.

Royal jelly is produced by stimulating colonies with movable frame hives to produce queen bees. Royal jelly is collected from each individual queen cell when the queen larvae are about four days old. Royal jelly has been reported as a possible immunomodulatory agent in Graves' disease. It has also been reported to stimulate the growth of glial cells and neural stem cells in the brain.



My thoughts: -Does getting royal jelly out of the hive harm the bees? -If it does, then companies shouldn't be able to put this jelly in anything since bees are going extinct

We just went across the street to this new place for take out lunch. They have a salad bar with a LOT of stuff. This guy in front of me got: salmon, brussel sprouts, & hard boiled eggs. Gross.

During the 24 hour period after Sarah Palin's acceptance speech, the Obama campaign raised $8 MILLION dollars. People are probably so annoyed that she is the VP candidate that they gave money to Obama. The Obama campaign expect to have a total of $10MM by the end of the week of new fundraising money.

Palin's Lies

The AP reported that Sarah Palin did not speak the truth in her acceptance speech on Wed night at the RNC:

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending … and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

The AP report also showed how Palin's champions have exaggerated the Alaskan governor's 'acheivements':

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply … She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. … She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right — change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington — throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

Election Issues: Ethanol

You may hear both candidates talking about ethanol & alternative fuel. Here is the 411 on Ethanol:

Ethanol means renewable energy and a domestic source of automobile fuel, but in America it also means corn, at least for now. And that means ethanol is a devil’s bargain.

Corn requires so much fertilizer — much of it derived from natural gas — and pesticides, derived from chemicals — that corn-based ethanol is only marginally less polluting than oil. Even if every arable acre of land in the United States was planted with corn, it would produce only about 12% of the gasoline we burn today.

Cellulosic ethanol can be made from grasses, waste wood and other crops grown on marginal lands with little or no need for fertilizers and pesticide. Many still believe in the promise of homegrown fuel.

Obama:

While Obama often acknowledges that cellulosic ethanol is a more attractive alternative fuel than is corn-based ethanol, he has been criticized for taking his cues on ethanol and farm policy from the corn growers who have contributed to his campaigns as an Illinois Democrat.


McCain:

McCain has opposed subsidies for corn growers at times, and though he's waffled somewhat on the issue as a candidate, he has talked about opposing subsidies for corn growers. He strongly opposes the tariff on Brazilian ethanol, which protects domestic corn growers. In general, he supports the use of ethanol and the development of cellulosic ethanol, but doesn't lay out many specifics about the issue in his Lexington Project energy plan.

New Bed!!

Well I have very exciting news. Erik & I bought a new bed. We have a queen bed that I got back in 2002. I think a queen is great.......for one person. Or, for me & Evie. hahahaha.

We went to the store yesterday & left with buying a King bed. The guy was very cool, not a sleazy salesman, and educated us. He was like listen, this bed is crap b/c of this. This one is OK. This one, I wont sell to you because its over priced. We got a great bed & its coming NEXT FRIDAY. YIppee. I can't wait.

It's Official....

I am NOT doing the SJ Half. Thank you everyone for your help & advice. I realized that if this is not fun, it hurts to do, why do it? I will have fun doing 5Ks and 10Ks.

Off Shore Drilling

We are all hearing about who is for & against 'Off Shore Drilling' in this election. I am against off shore drilling because it means we are dependent on oil, albeit US oil, but oil for another 5-7 years. We MUST find alternatives to oil in biofuels. McCain is for Drilling and Obama is for Drilling as a temporary measure but supports research for new fuels.

Erik & I drove down to Half Moon Bay today in the late afternoon for dinner. We went to the Half Moon Bay Brewery. It was so hot & sunny today - like 80 or 85. We had a few drinks and dinner. I had fish tacos which were really good!

Other thoughts on the Running issue

If I do the SJ Half:
-I will hate my life in September b/c I will be training
-I will be sore & have to go back to the chiro and or foot doctor
-I will have one more Half on my running resume(does that matter for anything?)

If I don't do it:
-I will waste the money I spent to join the FF team
-I will feel like a loser for signing up and not doing it
-My back and hips won't hurt
-I can do shorter runs like 5Ks and 10Ks including a 10K on 11/2 here in SF

OK, thoughts please. I need advice.

Running Issues

Ok everyone. So, I could hardly sleep on Saturday. I woke up every hour and was thinking, don't do that run on Sunday. I dont want to run. What am I going to do. I finally got up at 730am and called my friend Jessica. She said that maybe I was overwhelmed with just joining this run team and having done 3 miles on Tues and forcing myself to do 6 miles on Sun was too much.

She said just b/c the team is running 6, maybe I should do it on my own so I am not a worried mess. Literally, I had a stomachache. I dont know what my problem was. I never felt this way with TNT. Maybe it was because I started with them from Mile 1 and this team is already on week 4.

So, I went out today to do 6 miles. It was nice & warm and sunny. I got to 2 miles and walked a little. It was hot. Like 85 hot. My back was tightening up and my hips and my feet were aching. I stopped to stretch. If this is how it feels at 6miles, I really really do not know how I am going to get through 13. At this point in my TNT training, I started going to the chiropractor 3x a week. I really just don't think my body is built to stand up to long distances. I would MUCH rather run 5Ks and 10Ks. Its nice, short, quick achievements.

I have always liked to do things with quick results. Even when it comes to crafts, I scrapbook to see immediate results instead of knitting or sewing. It's because I have zero patience when it comes to anything.

So at this point, I dont want to run this race. I will give my registration to Erik and go down to support my friends Bailey & Erin. I think that running is supposed to be fun and I am not having fun. What would you do if you were me?

Oh and when I run for long distances, my hands swell. My fingers get fat.
