Evie's Stomach Issues

When we got back to CA, Evie had an issue....blood in her stool. Not good. She had this a few months ago and it went away on its own. However, since it was happening again, I wanted to take her to the Vet to get checked out.

Evie does NOT like the Vet. She used to be OK but that was before her dog bite injury and knee surgery. Now, she shakes like crazy at the vet. So, to keep her and everyone else safe - we put a muzzle on her.

This look says, "I hate you Mommy"

So mad. She tried pulling the muzzle off like ten times but alas, let the Vet handle her. We went to a new Vet in Berkeley, just down the street from us. Campus Vet was AWESOME. We met with Dr. Reid who was super nice, calm, and a great Vet. Evie was a nervous wreck but she handled her gently.

She put Evie on special dinner (aka cottage cheese and white rice mixture) for a few days plus pills to bind her up. She was going to run a fecal test for any parasites but she thinks it might be her food. Evie had these issues a few years ago and we switched her to Perscription ID food which is for sensitive stomach. Now, she thinks that her system needs a different food.

I'm guessing that once we get through this, we might go on something that is grain free. Maybe Evie needs a gluten free diet -  haha!

In other news, Evie needs to lose a few pounds. She needs to lose approximately 7 pounds so we don't have any issues with her being overweight as she gets older. Being overweight + her orthopedic issue of her knee could be a serious issue. So, we will get through this bout of GI issues then adjust her food intake/exercise schedule.

Evie's Big Day at the Office

Our office is dog friendly and for three months now, my co-workers have been telling me to bring Evie in. Of course, I have said "Absolutely Not" but this week, I thought, why not try it? I was inspired by this quote:

Decide that you want it more than you are afraid of it.
--Bill Cosby

I am still nervous to bring Evie around new people because I know how she MAY act. However, I would love it if she could come to work with me and so I decided to not be afraid of how she MIGHT act and just do it.

I brought her in on Friday, since we get out at 2pm for Summer Fridays. Also, three people were out of the office so the less people for her to meet, the better. We drove into work and took the elevator up to the office. Riding the elevator was a first for Evie and it was hilarious! She crouched on the ground & was scared. hah

We came into the office & she was amped up. I got her excited to see everyone so we went around to see everyone. She loved it! She was letting everyone pet her and said hello to everybody!

We went into my office & put up the baby gate for her. What she did NOT like was my co-worker coming over and saying Hi over the fence. She barked at him but as soon as I brought her outside of the office to say hi, she was fine. So, I'm sure it was something to do with him coming into her space or something. BUT, then we had a meeting and she came, and she barked at my other coworker for no reason. So, we had to keep my office door closed all day.

Everyone was really great about her being there. We came out a few times to see everyone and she was licking my boss' face which was hilarious. They know she is a rescue & in a new place. They were all asking for her to come back. However, I think she was bored, on alert all day, and more of a pain for me to have to watch her every move than a nice addition to the day. She is probably going to be much happier at camp than with me. But, we tried it! And, it wasn't a total disaster!!

We took a nice walk during lunch. Oops - it says no pets allowed in the park! It's Ok. we strolled through on our way to Levi Plaza.

Walton Square is in the Financial District/Jackson Square area of SF. It is a cute, little park nestled in between some corporate buildings.

There are some fun sculptures in the park, too!

Giant Cacti?

I love the walkways and water in Levi Plaza park! It's so quiet, too.

There is a great brook that runs through the park. Evie wanted to go in the water but was too chicken.

Great view of Coit Tower from Levi Plaza

After our stroll, it was almost time to leave work. Evie was anxious to get going & probably tired of laying in the office. We headed home where she promptly got on the couch & passed out.

Later in the afternoon, we did some errands to the grocery store, dry cleaner, bank, and Office Depot. I am finally going to get the Save the Date cards out this weekend, hopefully!

When Erik came home, we went to the Bean Bag Cafe for a beer and then came home to eat pizza we ordered. Great start to the weekend!

Murphy's Law

I've decided that I want to try to get Evie to camp once a week, during the week. This will require us to get up a little early and drive down to camp. I've decided to do this since it's easier to drive to my new office, parking is cheaper, plus if I stay past a certain hour, work will pay for the parking. Evie will get out of the house and get to play!

So, last week, I drove her down to camp and the traffic was horrendous. I thought, this seems a little much for 7am traffic. Turns out, there was a equally horrendous accident.

The day I chose to bring Evie to camp was also a day I had to be at work at 830 for an internal meeting. I had planned the dropoff and return time so that I would be at the office before 830. Well, that did not happen!

Thankfully, I got Evie to camp and could take a different route to work and was only late by 15 min. Plus, I was able to call work and let them know so everything was fine. It just goes to show no matter how much planning ahead you do, sometimes things happen that you cannot control!

Evie In the Bed

I have had Evie for almost 2 years. I got her when she was 1 and she is turning 3 this weekend. We never established where Evie should sleep because for the few mos that I had her before we moved, she lived in a million places. She went from the shelter director's house, to the shelter, to my Mom's, to my house, back to my Mom's(while I packed to move), then to CA with us. When we got to the new apartment, she just got in the bed with us so we let her. Bad move. We tried to kick her out but she cries and cries that we give in. I tried to put her bed next to mine and leash her to the bed - doesn't work.

Well, now, we want to try again. She is going to live for many years and really, I can't handle her in the bed for another 10 years or whatever. It is going to be painful. I will need earplugs and strong will. I will be sad but she takes up too much room!

Muddy Dog

A few days ago, it was humid outside around 7pm. Evie was outside running around and then saw.....the mud. She started running and rolling in it just like her little piggy self.

Time to clean up - look at that mud on the wall!!

Funny Evie Pics

Evie was super tired yesterday. She slept on the couch, the floor, the bed....And then went to bed at 10pm.

I know I look crazy here but it is because I am laughing

Mud

Evie was in the mud again today. This made bath #4 for her for the week. She was putting her whole face in the mud & was covered. It was so funny. But, when she got home, she puked up mud. I can imagine it tastes horrible b/c she smelled really bad! It was funny though & she had fun.

Evie Sleeping

Evie was sleeping on the couch last night under a blanket. How CUTE.

PR for my dog

So, Evie, is a rescue dog. From what we know about her, she had a very rough first year of life. She wasnt fed, neglected, and I think, abused. I really think that she lived with a Hispanic or African American family. We could be walking down the street and a Hispanic or Black person could be walking down the street doing NOTHING and she will start losing it. She will bark and jump. Now, I have learned the signs of this happening and know to hold her tight and tell her to keep walking. She is getting a tiny bit better. I also realized to stop letting people pet her because sometimes they pet her & she's fine, and then she loses it.

I feel really bad for people when she does this to them b/c they are not doing anything.

Anyway, I realized I need to do some public relations for her. She is part pit so people already think she is out to eat their face. She is very muscular. She sometimes looks scary, even to me, when she is just sitting on the rug doing nothing. SO - when people ask if she is friendly, I immediately tell them she is a "rescue dog" and warn them that she will bark & jump. But then I quickly follow up to say that its not them, she is just very protective. I dont know if this is helping to say she is a RESCUE dog, but I hope it is.

Dog Owners Update

I made progress today! This morning I introduced myself to Wasabii's dad (harry) and Kita's mom(Emily). Yippee. I now know all of Evie's friends parents. (Isn't that sick I just called her DOG pals 'friends')

This morning, Evie played with Wasabii. They love each other. Evie just rolls over while Wasabii bites her legs, face, ears. When Wasabii had to leave, Evie was trying to pull me down the park. She didn't want Wasabii to leave. Wasabii kept turning around to look at Evie and she laid down. It was funny but they were both sad girls.
I have to bring my camera out to take a picture of them together.

Oh and I am going to miss Evie like crazy when we are gone next week. Thankfully, Erik is bringing her to camp tomorrow. If I did it, I would probably be crying. I know, how ridiculous!

Funny pic of Evie and I from when we were driving cross country to California!

Dog Owners

So I know every dog's name in the park but know about 3 dog owners names. Its ridiculous. When a new dog & owner come to the park the owner says, 'This is Pookie' and everyone says their dog names but not their own!

I seriously stand out there for 30 mins with this one guy and his dog(Wasabii) and do not know his name. I know where he works. I know where he's going on vacation. I do not know his name.

I did meet a new dog AND his owner the other day but she introduced herself to me.

So, I'm going to make it a point to ask everyone their name. But, now I feel really weird about asking their name. However, tonight this one guy we see ALL the time introduced himself to me. It seems stupid to feel weird to ask someones name after all of this time. Maybe they feel weird too so they will be happy when I ask their name.

This is Evie a few mos after she came to the shelter in early 2007. She had to wear a tshirt because her hair was just growing in. Doesn't she look SO different!?

Evie Got In Trouble

This morning, Evie got in trouble in the park. Now, everyone should know that Evie 1)loves loves loves to meet other dogs and play with them. She loves to run and chase her dog friends. 2)She cannot be off leash like most dogs because she does not come back when she is called.

Although she cannot be off leash, there are a few dogs that I can drop her short leash and she can play with such as Maybelle.

This morning, her and Maybelle were running around playing. This guy started walking down the path with two dogs that looked like Scottie dogs. Before he even gets to us, he starts to pick his dogs up. But he is picking them up by the leash so they are dangling by their necks. Evie sees this & runs over and jumps up on the guy. The guy starts yelling 'No, No, No'.

Couple things - Evie probably just wanted to say hello. She probably was wondering what the heck was going on with these dogs hanging by their necks. Then, she probably freaked out that the guy was yelling. I went over, grabbed her & we walked away.

I said I was sorry, she just wants to play. The guy was like - this is ridiculous or whatever he said. Then, he walked off. I've never seen this guy or his dogs before. I was mad that Evie ran over but also mad that I didn't recognize that she would run off(because normally she stays with us and Maybelle). But, I was also pissed that the guy had a heart attack. Evie did not hurt him or the dogs. She wasn't barking or biting. I really think this was a case of people who are scared of Pit bulls (since she is clearly part Pit). If he just walked his dogs like a normal freaking person, she would have ignored him!

Anyway - I will get over it. And, be extra careful about her running around. And, probably get more serious about her recall training.

Evie Actually Fetching

Evie hates to play fetch outside with a ball. Everyone has these ball launchers and their dogs go crazy for them. Evie has one that she will fetch about one time and then ignores it. However, if other dog owners have them, she goes crazy.

She goes crazy only because she knows a dog will be running for the ball and she wants to run with them - she could care less about the ball.

Erik had this great idea to put a treat in the ball and throw it for her. It worked!!!
Here is a video of her actually playing fetch & she looks like she enjoys it. Sorry, it is sort of shaky cam and somewhat boring.

Barking Dog!

Evie was being so strange tonight. I took her to the park after work and she was running with a bulldog. The bulldog tripped over himself and he laid down and was whimpering. All of the sudden, Evie ran over to him and started barking. Went up to the dog's owner and barking barking barking. We walked away and she was barking non-stop. At nothing. At people. At another dog. Came home. Barking. Non. Stop.

I have no idea what her problem was. She spent from about 730-9 staring out the window barking too.

Finally, she stopped and at about 1030 wanted to play with her toys. Maybe she was trying to tell everyone about her dog friend getting hurt. Who knows. What I do know is that it was annoying to listen to!

Finding dogs and people to bark out through the window

I think she thinks she is a cat. Look how depressed she is because I told her to stop barking.

Evie's Friend Maybelle

I tried to take a picture of Evie and Maybelle the other day but they wouldn't sit still.
